Career Development Notes for Middle Creek Students and Parents

In 2007, 102 Middle Creek High School Graduates earned articulated credit in 102 Career and Technical Education courses

Work Permits:

Any North Carolina resident under the age of 18 who works for wages must have a Youth Work Permit on file with their employer. Work permits are now issued on-line from the NC Department of Labor (www.nclabor.com). To obtain a work permit, follow these instructions:

The student must first have a job.

The student or employer logs onto the NC Department of Labor web site; clicks on the ”Your Work Permit” button from the Quick Clicks menu.

After reading the instruction on the next page, go to “Click Here” to complete the YECAUTO certificate.

On the application page, the employee and employer complete the requested information. (If you do not have an e-mail address, this space may be left blank.)

· The employer must choose the kind of business

· Must answer the question about on-premises ABC permit

· Choose proposed job

At this point, the application can be submitted and a certificate printed. The permit will be printed with an effective date and a Certificate Number.

Employer, employee, and employee’s parent or guardian must sign the completed, printed certificate.

WEB SITES FOR CAREER EXPLORATION

Students are being introduced to the Futures 4 Kids web portal (www.f4k.org). Students can enter the middlecreek code and use this site to explore careers. Students register (using their NCWISE password) and take a brief inventory. They can then read about at least 40 careers. Each career features interviews, discussion boards, employment information, and for some, “A day in the life of…” videos. This web portal continues to expand and add new features, such as career coaches and discussion boards.

Another site that we are encouraging students to become familiar with is College Foundation of North Carolina (www.cfnc.org). Once students have identified what they want to study after high school, the cfnc.org site allows them to find a place in North Carolina where they can get the additional education that they will need. The cfnc.org site is one of the best places to begin the search for scholarship information since every school lists all of the scholarships that they offer. Students can match their personal preferences with postsecondary schools at the College Fair Matching Assistant. The more familiar students become with this site, the easier it will be for them to navigate to information that they need.

You may contact Dr. Wimmer at bwimmer@wcpss.net or at 773-3870.
