2006-2007 School Year

Suzanne Jordan was a Governor's Page and a House Page this summer in the month of June 2006.

Sarah Crandall was allowed to serve as a Governor's Page in August. Sarah was able to gain knowledge about the operations of state government as well as enjoying her one week there.

Joanne Wilson, Katie Vohwinkel and Sara Richardson were members of the cast of AIDA. AIDA was a professional run show that was open to all Wake County students. There were over 200 student auditioning for those roles.

Senior Katie Zhu has been named a National Merit Semi-Finalist based on her PSAT scores as a junior. Katie will now complete an application in order to be considered for a National Merit Scholarship. National Merit Scholarships are among the most prestigious scholarships in the country. Therefore, Semi-Finalists and Finalists often receive special consideration in the admissions process. Good luck, Katie Zhu!

Middle Creek High Art Students entered in the Raleigh Street Painting Festival. MCHS won second place out of all the teams at all the high schools in Wake County. The winning design was created by Amanda Kiehm, Art II student. helping Amanda chalk was a former Art III honors student, Allison Vincent. The other 7 designs that were chalked by students in Art II, III and honors III classes.

August 23, 2006: MCHS Mighty Marching Mustang Band won 1st place overall in class 2A, tied for 1st place Visual, 1st place Music, 1st place Marching, Excellent overall rating, 3rd place overall Drum Major and the first time ever 1st place Pit Crew (parents working with the band). We are very proud of the hard work these students have done.

Courtney Crigger has been accepted to participate in the 2006 Young Professionals Institute at the North Carolina Music Educators Conference in Winston Salem.

Amanda Newport has been named a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program. She has received a Letter of Commendation from National Merit recognizing her exceptional academic promise. This recognition is based on her performance on the PSAT last year as a junior.

Tennis player Sarah Cox was undefeated in Conference. She was the Tri-8 Conference Tournament champion and Tri-8 Player of the Year.

For an outstanding Homecoming Week we would like to thank our SGA Executive Branch and Class Presidents:
Graham Sharpe, Mike Frongello, Lauren Rhodes, Elizabeth Dobbins, Brooks Edwards, Phillip Bouche, Addison Maness, and Sky Hankins.

We would like to congratulate Graham Sharpe and Alexis Trost as our Homecoming King and Queen for 2006.

Our very own Carrie Jones has been awarded N.C. Earth Science Teacher of the Year.

Congratulations to our Concert Band and Choirs in concert last night (Oct. 17th). They did an outstanding job!

Amanda Addai is one of our National Achiever's Society Members. Amanda has been accepted into Campbell University. She plans on majoring in pharmacy.

The NC State Fair held a Web Graphics & Design Competition. Congratulations to Brandon Seagroves for 2nd place, Matthew Yancey for 3rd and Taylor Rodden for 4th.

Coastal Federal Credit Union and Sports Radio 850 named Emily Eby as September's Scholar Athlete of the month.

The Art Department at MCHS would like to recognize the following students for statewide recognition that they received for their art work at this year's NC State Fair.

Men's Soccer - 1st ever playoff berth secured! We won 2-0 vs. Panther Creek Oct. 25th and secured the 1st ever playoff berth. Varsity finished the regular season at 12-6-3 and JV finished an outstanding 16-4-0. Playoffs begin next week at either Lumberton or Fayetteville. Soccer has shown improvement each year since the inaugural season Year 1: 3 wins, Year 2: 5 wins, Year 3: 7 wins, Year 4: 9 wins, this year: 12 wins and counting!

Congratulations to Brandon Finch on your nomination for the Wendy's 2006 High School Heisman award. It is a great honor that your have been recognized as the best in your school in the areas of academics, athletics and community involvement.

Congratulations to all the students who were inducted into Middle Creek's very 1st Spanish Honor's Society.

Congratulations to the Mightly Marching Mustang Band of MCHS! The band performed at the Carolina Cavalcade of Bands at Central Cabarrus High School on Saturday. They won 1st place in Music Effect and 2nd place in Drum Major. The band was 3rd place in class and every other caption by 1/10% of a point. After the contest many positive comments were heard about our band's performance and behavior.

Congratulation to Sophomore Courtney Rousse (Golf): 4th in the Tri-8 Conference, Tri-8 All Conference Team, Tri-8 Academic All Conference, 7th in the 4A East Regional, Top 25 in the State of N.C.

Congratulations to Amber Christmas for winning the title of Garner's Outstanding Teen. She competed on Nov. 3 & 4 at North Garner Middle School with 7 other contestants. She had to prepare an essay on her platform which is Breast Cancer Awareness: Family History, as well as prepare a personal resume, compete in Talent, Physical Fitness, Casual Wear, and Evening Wear.

MCHS sophomore, John Turner, recently received the President's Volunteer Service Award. This award is issued by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation on behalf of the President of the United States to recognize the best in American spirit and to encourage all Americans to contribute to their communities through volunteer service.

Recognition is given to Katy Walls for her outstanding work in digital media.

Varsity Cheerleaders placed 2nd in the NC State Invitational on Sat., Dec. 9th in Greensboro.

The Morehead Foundation has selected Graham Sharpe as a semifinalist for the Morehead Scholarship.

Congratulations to the many talented individuals who made our Holiday Choral Concert a big success on Thursday, December 14th.

Katy Walls as well as a staff writer for the Fuquay-Varina Independent and the Holly Springs Sun entered a paper in the North Carolina Press Association Contest. They received third place statewide for the article in the category of general news reporting. Congratulations to Katy and the staff writer, Stephanie Eaton Harvie for an outstanding journey edition.

MCHS has it's first Scholastic Art award winners in the Eastern/Central NC regional Art competition. Eastern/Central North Carolina Region Scholastic Art Award Gold Key Finalist are Sarah Brooks and Elise McAllister.

Congratulation to Marcus Kitts for being the 1st MCHS basketball player to be selected for the NC vs. SC All-Star basketball game played at Winthrop University on March 17th.

Congratulation to the JV and Varsity Cheerleaders both for placing 1st in the county. Also the Varsity are Grand Champions for the 3rd year.

Congratulations to the girl's swim team, Minell Enslin, Taylor Treadaway, Kristen Erb and Jenna Cherry qualified their 200 Freestyle Relay for next weekend's State Championship Meet. The boys team finished 5th overall and qualified all three relays for States. Kristian Hellem, Brandon Hilton, Wayne Erb, Asa Beavers, Michael Williams and Jeremy Sperlazza will compete. Divers Adam Ehinger and Chris Stagner also qualified to compete for the State Championship. In addition to the swimmers who qualified to compete in the State Championship, Hilary Colborn and Jessica Tate also sawn yesterday and did a great job!

Congratulations to the MCHS Barbershop Quartetes. "The Rolling Tones" made up of Lena Zwarg, Meg Ann Rousch, Krysta Gahagen, and Katie Knight and "Fortune" who competed in the 11th Annual Wake County Barbershop Quartet Championship last night. Special Kudoes to Fortune who won 2nd place. Tenor - Sarah Humphrey, Lead - Sarah Richardson, Baritone- Christi Powell, Bass - Katie Hockaday.

The Triangle Chapter of the American Red Cross is proud to announce that Amy Hodges, sophomore, has been selected as a finalist for the 2007 Queen of Hearts Program.

Melbin de los Santos on February 13 went to Washington, representing 1000 member families of the Raleigh Association of Community Organizations for Reform, where he presented his report on how work and wages affect local families.

Congratulations to the girl's and boy's basketball in the state playoffs. This is a 1st for Middle Creek.

Brooks Edwards, a senior here at Middle Creek High and middle linebacker for the Mustang's Football Team, accepted an offer from Elon University to join their football program. Brooks tailed 154 total tackles this past season, a single season record at Middle Creek. he was a Tri-Eight All Conference selection and and ended his seniors season with a 24 tackle, 1 sack, 1 funble recovery effort in the Mustangs play-off game against Garner High School. Brooks has consistently shown leadership on and off the field and has served our school as Senior Class President this year. Will you join me in congratulating Brooks and wishing him well as he continues his football career at Elon.

The Varsity Girl's Basketball Team was the 1st team to compete in the state playoffs competition in the high school 4-A tournament.

Lauren Kanapaux, a junior, has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a state-level Certificate of Excellence from The 2007 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

Joshua Banks, a senior, has been selected as a semi-finalist for the NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award. Award amounts are $1,000 for Young Entreprenuer Awards, $5,000 for National Awards, and $10,000 for Entrepreneur of the Year. Winners will be selected in late April.

At the NC DECA Career Development Conference, senior Lauren DeHart made proficiency in the Advertising Campaign Event and senior Kristin Page placed in the state's top 10 in the Fashion Promotion Plan Event. Kristin was also awarded a $4,000 Bryan School of Business & Economics Scholarship (UNC-Greensboro) at the conference.

Raleigh Fine Arts Society has awarded Michael Olejar an At-Large Prize in this year's contest for the manuscript "The Answer" and Jordan Ashley Lankford has been awarded Honorable Mention in this year's contest for the manuscript "Jaymee's Wind".

Congratulations to the Middle Creek School Choral Music Dept. The students competed at the North Carolina Music Educator's Association State Music Contest at Meredith College in Raleigh. The choirs earned the following awards ranking them as one of the top choirs in the area:
Women's Chorale: Superior in Performance in Grade VI, Superior in Sightreading
Choral Ensemble: Superior in Performance in grade VI, Superior in Sightreading
Mixed Ensemble: Excellent in Performance in Grade III, Superior in Sightreading

We are happy that the MCHS Concert Band received an Excellent in Grade IV at the Central District Festival at Athens Drive High School. They also received a Superior in sign reading. The Symphonic Band received a Superior in Grade V at Central District Festival. they received I's from all 4 judges including sight reading. Great Job!

Manix Eluhu, who is a senior, was recognized as Youth of the Month by the West Raleigh Exhange Club for his accomplishment and in recognition of outstanding qualities of leadership.

The following students have been selected "All-County" and will perform the Mozart Requiem with the North Carolina Master Chorale on April 22nd at 3pm in Meymandi Hall in downtown Raleigh:
Justin Borden, Brit Germann, Jordan Jaked, Alec Kelsey, Katie Knight, Tyler Oakley, Pamela Revak and Kirby Treadaway.

The Middle Creek Key Club was awarded second place in the scrapbook competition, first place in poster (which will be sent to International Convention in July), and was recognized as one of the Outstanding Clubs in the Carolinas District. Our club had six members attend the convetion: Anna Petrova, John Turner, Pam Revak, Evan Inglett, Jennifer Conley, and Suzi Petrolongo.

Coutrney Crigger won 1st place in the State Level of the Women's Club Art Competition! That is a first for Middle Creek! She received a blue ribbon, certificate and a cash award.

On March 22nd the National Honor's Society worked to beautify our campus as a service project.

Besides the 1st place in Photography by Casey Wyatt, Middle Creek students worked in a cooperative group effort with Athens Drive students to win two 2nd place awards. We'ss call the combo effort "Athens/Creek:! Athens/Creek wom 2nd place in a skit, which included Middle Creek's Casey Wyatt. Athens/Creek also won 3rd place in Jultur Pokal - Level II, a type of German Jeopardy, which included Middle Creek's Mandy Newport. In the Kultur Pokal - Level I, our Middle Creek students narrowly missed a 3rd place award ib a technicality. They deserve honorable mention: Minell Enslin, Matthew Fagan, and Anja Petrova.

The following students have been working hard since September of 2006 on a National History Day competition. they wond the regioinal competition and now they will compete for the State Championship on April 28th at the Museum of History in Raleigh. The national competition will be held at the University of Maryland this June:

After a rigorous competition on the local and state level, two junior students have been selected to attend Governor's School, Mary Goodnight - Clarinet and Sarah Price - Drama.

Varsity Cheerleaders, 2nd Time National Champions. Battle at the Beach Spirit Sports National Championship. 1st place on both days!

The American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League present a Certificate of Honorable Merit to Terry James, Shannon Cobb and Jennifer Kessing for outstanding performance in the National Latin Examination.

Brittany Miller, a 5’11’’ Senior Forward basketball player at Middle Creek High School, will sign a basketball scholarship with Mount Olive College on April 11, 2007. Brittany averaged 13 points and 7 rebounds per game during her senior campaign. She was named to the Tri 8 All Conference Team her senior season. Brittany Miller is only the second player in school history to record over 400 points and 400 rebounds in her career at Middle Creek HS. Brittany was named to the Tri 8 Academic All Conference team all 4 years of high school. Brittany is a four year member of the Varsity basketball team. She received the 2006-07 Middle Creek Most Valuable Player Award for women’s basketball for her senior leadership and for her performances this season.

Brittany Johnston, a 6’0’’ Senior Forward basketball player at Middle Creek High School, will sign a basketball scholarship with Saint Andrews Presbyterian College on April 11, 2007. Brittany was named to the Tri 7 All Conference Team her junior year and the Tri 8 All Conference Team her senior season. She averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds per game during her senior campaign. Brittany was named to the Tri 8 Academic All Conference team this season as well. She is a four year member of the Varsity basketball team. Brittany Johnston is the all time rebound leader at Middle Creek High School. She leaves Middle Creek in second place among the all time scoring leaders. She is only the second player in school history to record over 400 points and 400 rebounds in her career at Middle Creek. Brittany received the 2006-07 Middle Creek Coaches Award for her senior leadership role on the women’s basketball team this season.

Melanie Gilkey received an "honorable mention" for her pastel self-portrait in the Fine Arts League of Cary "2007 Teen Art Show"

Dylan Redding has been named the most outstanding student in American History at Middle Creek High by the social studies department. He has been honored by the Woodmen of the World Lodge.

Sarah Crandall won the $1000.00 Home Builder's Association Scholarship. Only five of these are given out across the country.

David Muse was recognized by the Triangle Chapter of the National Football Foundation as an Outstanding Scholar Athlete. The honor brings with it a $1000.00 scholarship. In addition, David was accepted in the Honors Program at NCSU where he plans to study aerospace engineering. Only 150 of 425 invited applicants were accepted.

The Sculpture and Ceramics I students put up an invitational Art Show at the new Cary Town Hall. The show ran through the month of April and featured sculpture, kites and pottery by MCHS students and staff. The Cary officials were very impressed with the students art work and have asked them to do it again next year.

The National History Day Team competed at the state championships downtown at the Museum of History. The team was tied for 2nd place and entered a runoff competition in the last part of the day. Unfortunately in the tie-breaker runoff we lost by one point. The team finished 3rd and missed going to the National Championship by one point. Team members include, Stephanie Barnhouse, Tony Lucas, Dillon Redding, Greyson Smith and Stephen Wiley.

The following students were nominated to participate in the Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics. Nicolette Rossmell, Sarah Phillips and Wesley Verne.

May 2, 2007, at the Track and Field Tri-8 Championship, the following students took 1st play (won the conference in their event):

Avonte Jones won two events: Triple Jump and 300 meter Hurdles
Brittany McClain - Long Jump

Congratulations to Brittany McClain for the NCHSAA 4A Track Meet in the long jump by jumping 16' 6.5". She will compete Saturday at NC A&T.

The National Charity League Board of Directors, Raleigh Chapter, is pleased to announce that Sarah Crandall has been awarded the 2007 NCL Graduating Senior Award for outstanding volunteer community service.

The Middle Creek High School Bands had a superior performance yesterday at the Spring Concert.

Congratulations to the Set and Design for winning 1st place, with Wake County, in Guy's & Dolls.

Last school year 335 AP exams were ordered. This year that has increased to 394 exams ordered!

Adrian Gilliam, 9th grader, was recently accepted to be a part of a competitive research project run by Elon University, UNC-G and Orange County Schools. Students will attend a one week Biology Camp at Camp Chestnut Ridge in Orange County, NC and will study Herpetology and follow up by doing monthly field work through the spring of 2008.

The Sertoma International Club honored each graduating African American sernior with the highest grade point average in each plase, place name Wake, place type county, play type public school. Middle Creek was represented by Amanda Addai who had the highest grade point average amoung African American students here. She received a letter from the Governor concerning her accomplishment.

Middle Creek High School has been recognized as a "School of the Year" by EF Foundation for Foreign Study. This award is given annually to high schools that make hosting exchange students a top priority and that foster environments of international awareness and cultural celebration.
